In April 2026, A major step towards strengthening Zambia’s livestock sector was achieved through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and Livestock Services Cooperative Society.

The partnership focuses on the delivery of Artificial Insemination (AI) services, veterinary diagnostics and integrated livestock genetics systems, supporting the national ambition to increase Zambia’s cattle population to 7.4 million head.

For livestock farmers, the partnership represents an opportunity to access improved breeding technologies and professional livestock services that can contribute to stronger and more productive herds.

Through Artificial Insemination, farmers can gain access to quality genetics from selected breeding programmes, providing an alternative to relying solely on natural breeding. Combined with veterinary diagnostics and integrated genetics systems, these interventions can support better breeding decisions, improved herd health and increased productivity.

The anticipated benefits extend across the value chain, from healthier and more productive cattle to increased milk and meat production, ultimately supporting farmer incomes and national food security.

The partnership demonstrates the power of collaboration between government and technical service providers in addressing some of the structural challenges affecting livestock production.

Growing the national herd is not simply about increasing numbers. It is about building a healthier, more productive and genetically stronger national herd capable of supporting Zambia’s long-term agricultural and economic ambitions.
